How to Get the Best Spray Tan

from wikiHow – The How to Manual That You Can Edit

Spray tanning is safer than the sun, and is a great way to get ready for swimsuit bikini season. You can get that bronzed look in no time and look great for special events. In order to achieve the perfect spray tan there are several things you need to know.

Steps

Exfoliate before you appointment. Its best to exfoliate the night before you appointment with a water based exfoliant, but you can also use a loofah, wash cloth or salt or sugar based scrub. If they have essential oils in them that is okay but the scrub should NOT leave your skin very oily.

Arrive to your appointment early. It’s better than being late.

Do not wear perfume, deodorant, makeup or jewelry to your appointment.

Do wear loose fitting, dark clothing and flip flops or slides to your appointment. Tight fitting clothing might take off the tan.

Bring an old bathing suit, or generic underwear to your appointment, as guide tan color will rub off on these garments.

Consult with your spray tan and inform them of any very dry skin areas, broken or abraded skin, wounds, and allergies.

Decide with your technician if you will go topless or nude for your spray tan. It’s perfectly okay if you don’t.

If you have perspired during your ride over to the salon ask for a cool cloth or gentle wipe to absorb the sweat and then dry your body before the actual spray session begins.

Follow technicians directions and be mindful to keep legs spread apart and inner arm from touch torso. If your arms and thighs touch this can create friction which could cause “holes,” in your tan and result in an uneven color.

Post Tan

After your spray tan session allow the solution to air dry for a minimum of 10 minutes. Once you have done this then you can step into a robe and sit and enjoy a cool beverage and read a magazine at the salon for 20 more minutes.

When dry to the touch-dress with your loose fitting dark clothing and flip flops or loose shoes.

Allow 6-8 hours of “setting time,” to go by before engaging in any strenuous exercise or activities that may cause you to perspire.

Keep hands away from water for 6-8 hours. Use wipes to clean hands during “tanning time.”

Do not carry a clutch or heavy purse or backpack under arm or over shoulders as this will cause “rub-off,” of solution.

Refrain from any rubbing action of body skin during “tan time,” (6-8 hours) to achieve best result.

Shower as late as possible the day of your spray tan, or for best result shower next morning.

Lay a dark loose sheet over your couch, or bed during “tanning time,” to collect any tan guide color that is expected to rub off.

Relax by watching television or reading during the next 6-8 hours while your tan “sets,” for an even and uniform tan result.

 Tips

Do not use loofah’s. Or scrub your body hard for the first week.

It is normal for guide color to come off.

Pat your skin dry.

Your hair cut and color should be finished BEFORE your tan session.

Any waxing should be completed at least 24 hours before you spray tan session.

Your manicure and pedicure WITH gloss should be finished before your appointment.

Your facial and body treatment should be done at least 24 hours before your sunless tan appointment.

Moisturize!

 Warnings

You are not protected from the sun with a spray tan. Still uses sunscreen/sunblock.

UV rays are harmful. Spray tanning is the safest way to tan.

Applying self tanner is not as simple as putting on moisturizing cream. Not only that, but applying it the wrong way can result really ugly results (a friend of mine stayed at home for 5 days after doing it wrong…). So here is an article I found about how to apply self tanner- I think you should read it.

How to Apply Self Tanner

from wikiHow – The How to Manual That You Can Edit

The safest way to tan is to leave UV rays out of the equation and use a self tanner (also known as sunless tanner). The two most common chemicals in self tanners are dihydroxyacetone (DHA) and Erythrulose, both of which work by reacting with the amino acids on the skin surface. You’ve probably heard (or seen) horror stories of bad self tanning jobs–streaks, orange hands, dark creases–but these steps will help you circumvent such disasters.

 Steps

Set aside enough time to apply self tanner. Ideally, you should have two or three hours to prance around naked (or almost naked). It’s possible to get everything done in a half hour, but that’s not a good idea if it’s your first time. Try to make sure you’ll have at least a solid hour to follow these steps.

Take a shower or bath. While you’re in there, you want to do the following:

Exfoliate. The chemicals in self tanner react with amino acids in the upper layers of your skin. By removing the uppermost layer (which would’ve sloughed off on its own soon anyway) you’re ensuring that the tan develops in a fresh layer that’s going to be around longer. Also, dry skin tends to absorb more color, increasing the likelihood of an uneven tan. Exfoliating will scrub off that dry skin. Just be sure to exfoliate thoroughly, because the spots you miss will tan differently than the spots you get.

Shave. This will make for a smoother tan, and it’s better to do before you apply self tanner rather than after. If you shave after the application, you risk creating splotches.[1] If, however, you have sensitive skin, you might want to avoid shaving before you apply the self tanner, or else your skin will get irritated.

Dry off. It’s important that while you’re applying the self tanner, your skin is completely dry. If you’re going to be in the bathroom, wait for any humidity from the bath or shower to subside. Make sure it’s cool enough wherever you are so that you don’t sweat for the next few hours.

Do some prep work. Massaging lotion into trouble spots (knees, elbows, feet, hands) before applying tanner may help to keep those spots from getting too dark.[2] Also, applying gradual tan moisturizer before the tanner can help make streaks and goofs less noticeable later on.[3] All of this, however, is totally optional.

Ready, set, apply! If you don’t want to risk getting orange hands, put on a pair of latex gloves. Spread the tanner over your skin in circular motions, making sure not to miss any spots. If you’re not using gloves, don’t spend too much time rubbing in the tanner (as the instructions often recommend) because your hands will get too much of it. Use a timer and make sure you wash your hands every five minutes, scrubbing under and around the nails.[4]

Around your feet, spread the tanner from your legs onto your ankles and the tops of your feet, and use as little as possible in this area. Don’t apply any to your toes, heels, or the sides of your feet.[4]

Apply the tanner sparingly on your face and neck because that skin will darken easily. Don’t forget behind your ears and the back of your neck, especially if you have short hair.[4]

While most people don’t have tanned underarms, avoiding that area can be difficult, so it’s better to apply self tanner there and lightly wipe with a damp washcloth about five minutes later.[4]

Lighten the trouble spots. After you’re done with the tanner, apply regular lotion to the tops of your feet and blend into your ankle, sides of your feet, and toes. Apply a small amount to your knees, especially just below the knee. Do the same thing to your elbows, especially the part that puckers when your arm is straight. Use a lot of lotion on your hands, and blend into your wrists. Rub your belly button with a cotton swab dipped in lotion. This will help prevent those spots from getting too dark.[4]

Wait. Avoid contact with anything or anyone for the first 15 minutes. Don’t get dressed for an hour. If that’s not convenient, put on a loose article of clothing. Avoid contact with water or doing anything that’ll make you sweat for the first three hours. Try to wait 8 hours before showering or bathing again. If you feel sticky, apply baby powder with a large body powder puff 30-60 minutes after applying the lotion. Don’t rub it in.[4]

 Video

 Tips

If you don’t have someone to help apply tanner on your back, use a spray or a sponge paintbrush or roller.

Don’t worry about borders; the skin on your lips and nipples won’t be very much affected by self tanner, so don’t go out of your way to avoid them.

Freckles and moles are likely to darken along with your skin.

Stretch marks that are less than a few years old are likely to darken.

Make your own self tanner at home

 Warnings

Even if the lotion contains sunscreen, don’t expect it to protect you from the sun. Sunscreen is supposed to be applied liberally, so the thin coat you put on with self tanner isn’t going to do much.

The reaction between your skin and the chemicals in tanner may cause an unpleasant smell.[5] It’ll go away after a few hours.

Airbrush tanning is one of the most effective methods of artificial tanning. This type of tanning is not only fast but is also very good in providing an even tan, right throughout the surface area of the skin. The advantage with this type of tanning is in the procedure and application process of the tan. Usually, people find it difficult in applying the tanning lotion or solution evenly over the skin surface. Even experienced people can make mistakes while applying the coat of the tan. This can lead to uneven tanning and also result in ugly blotches and streaks. With airbrush tanning, all these problems are eliminated; the equipment ensures a smooth and even spread of the tanning compound over the skin surface. The dependence on the skill and expertise of the person, who is applying the tan, is greatly reduced. Airbrush tanning is also relatively faster when compared to other types of artificial tanning. A single tanning session will not last more than 20 minutes and most of the times, it is sufficient and a second session is not required, unless the person wishes for it. The effects of airbrush tanning are similar to other methods and can last up to a maximum of three weeks.

Airbrush tanning equipment is the similar in function and looks, to the mechanical spray painting unit but with minor modifications. The spray gun and controls are modified to suit the tanning procedure. The nozzle is also customized to tanning requirements and can be adjusted to increase or decrease, spray density, speed and application. The airbrush can also be customized to cover different surface areas. Airbrush can also be used in all parts of the skin and does not need any additional procedural changes. So, while getting an airbrush tan, people can cover the complete body in a single session. The tanning lotion is sprayed on to the skin area and this spray is a finely particalized. This particalization ensures an even spread of the tanning lotion and it also dries very fast. Airbrush tanning can be done in salons and tanning parlors. They can also be done at home with the help of home airbrush units. This type of tanning is also very effective for people with sensitive skin and also people who are allergic to other types of tanners. Airbrush tanning is one of the popular methods of artificial tanning and its popularity is increasing by the day and more and more salons are specializing in offering their customers with different varieties of this tanning.

Tanning beds are quite popular now but that was not the case when these products were launched in the market. There was lot of apprehension in the people about the safety of these products and also about their ability to deliver what they promised. The pioneer of the technology that is used in the tanning beds is also the bath breaker for bringing this technology to the people by making it affordable. His name is Friedrich Wolff and he lends his name to the Wolff tanning beds and other Wolff tanning products. Of course, Wolff tanning is quite a common name in today’s world but that was not the case when the company was started. Wolff’s expertise was not in the manufacturing and marketing of tanning beds; his area of expertise was in the development, improvement and control of the technology that enables artificial production of UV rays. During the early 70s Wolff did a lot of research and was able to perfect and also patent the technology that could produce UV rays with the help of cheaper raw materials. Wolff’s patent on the technology meant that he had a virtual monopoly on a market that was still nascent and tentative.

Wolff started manufacturing and marketing tanning beds with his patented technology and it took a while for the people to accept its efficiency and safety. Within a few years the Wolff products became renowned for their effectiveness and cost efficiency and this brand value continues to this day. The patent on Wolff’s technology has long since expired and that has enabled other manufacturers to use the same technology without paying any royalty. But, even before that, Wolff technology was licensed to many manufacturers who had to display the “Wolff” badge along with their logos. The “Wolff” badge became a symbol of quality, safety and assurance amongst the general public.

The Wolff Technology used in the Wolff tanning beds has seen little change during the course of all these years. Barring a few minor modifications is the design of the bed, size and shaping of the fluorescent lamps and changes to the UV filter layers, the Wolff tanning beds remain more or less that same as they were thirty years ago. In fact, this minimum changes in design of the product has also made it an unofficial standard in the manufacture of tanning beds in the industry. Such is the brand name of Wolff and such is the recognition for his products.

Used tanning beds sale make up for almost 15% of the overall sales of tanning beds. This shows that used beds are a good value for money for the buyers. Tanning beds are inherently sturdy and can withstand a lot of rigor. In spite of sustained and regular use, they are good enough for second purchase. There are only a few parts that undergo serious wear and tear and those parts need to be replaced on a regular basis. Before buying used tanning beds, buyers must need to orient themselves about the components of the tanning beds and their uses. It not only helps them when they inspect the used product; it can also help them gauge the price based on the age and condition of the components.

The best way to determine the condition of the used tanning beds is by asking the sellers their reason for selling. Most of them will be honest to accept shortcomings of the product and the buyer can then weigh in the options and decide to proceed with the purchase or not. If the information is not forthcoming from the seller, the buyer will then have to resort to the fact finding mission and this is done best either by personal knowledge or expert knowledge that can be hired. Consultants will be willing to come along with the buyer to determine the condition of the used tanning machines, for a fee.

If expert services are unavailable, people will have to check the unit by themselves. The most important components to check are the fluorescent bulbs and the protective acrylic filters (if they are available in the model that is for sale). Fluorescent bulbs are the most used parts of the tanning beds and they need to be replaced periodically. This is because, the chemical coating that produces the UV rays, gradually erodes away and loses the ability to produce rays eventually. The protective shield of acrylic also needs to be repaired regularly or even replaced in some cases of extensive damage. These are the recurring costs that come as a part of maintenance can also be a price determining factor. If the used tanning beds have new bulbs and filter, they will cost more and if they are in need of replacement, the costs will be considerably lesser. Other components like hinges, upper unit, etc., will also need to be inspected before finalizing the purchase.

There are different products that offer various features when it comes to tanning beds but based on effectiveness all tanning beds for sale can be categorized into four broad types:

Lower end: The lower end products are functional representations of ‘tan maintainers’. These units are only optimized to provide low levels of tanning for individuals per session. It might take many sessions that are spread over several weeks to some level of visible tanning. People who are looking for instant tans must not purchase these tanning beds for sale. They do provide results but they take a long time in coming and might not be an attractive option to people who are looking to get their tans done at home. They are best suited to maintain an already established tan.

Lower mid range: These tanning beds for sale are meant for people who are on a tight budget or those who have limited amount of money to spend. They are certainly faster and better in efficiency when compared to the lower end products. But, they are still slow enough to merit a second thought on purchase. It might take a couple of weeks for a person to obtain a good and dark tan.

Upper mid range: the upper mid range products are ideal for home users. Not only are these tanning beds efficient in establishing a tan, they are also not over priced and remain within the reach of the general public. These tanning beds for sale are good enough to optimize best results in just two or three sessions. They also have better controls for regulation of the UV rays and are generally safer when compared to the lower ranges. These tanning beds are the most popular ones in the market and account for almost 60% of the market share.

Advanced range: These are high end tanning beds for sale that contain state of the art features and are also are powerful enough to give a healthy glow in just one session. They are also very effective in imparting different levels of tanning as per the requirements of the user. In spite of the high end price, these tanning beds for sale are quite popular with home users because of the user comfort and the high quality of tan that they impart.
