Steps

1. Exfoliate before you appointment. Its best to exfoliate the night before you appointment with a water based exfoliant, but you can also use a loofah, wash cloth or salt or sugar based scrub. If they have essential oils in them that is okay but the scrub should NOT leave your skin very oily.
2. Arrive to your appointment early. It’s better than being late.
3. Do not wear perfume, deodorant, makeup or jewelry to your appointment.
4. Do wear loose fitting, dark clothing and flip flops or slides to your appointment. Tight fitting clothing might take off the tan.
5. Bring an old bathing suit, or generic underwear to your appointment, as guide tan color will rub off on these garments.
6. Consult with your spray tan and inform them of any very dry skin areas, broken or abraded skin, wounds, and allergies.
7. Decide with your technician if you will go topless or nude for your spray tan. It’s perfectly okay if you don’t.
8. If you have perspired during your ride over to the salon ask for a cool cloth or gentle wipe to absorb the sweat and then dry your body before the actual spray session begins.
9. Follow technicians directions and be mindful to keep legs spread apart and inner arm from touch torso. If your arms and thighs touch this can create friction which could cause “holes,” in your tan and result in an uneven color.

Post Tan

1. After your spray tan session allow the solution to air dry for a minimum of 10 minutes. Once you have done this then you can step into a robe and sit and enjoy a cool beverage and read a magazine at the salon for 20 more minutes.
2. When dry to the touch-dress with your loose fitting dark clothing and flip flops or loose shoes.
3. Allow 6-8 hours of “setting time,” to go by before engaging in any strenuous exercise or activities that may cause you to perspire.
4. Keep hands away from water for 6-8 hours. Use wipes to clean hands during “tanning time.”
5. Do not carry a clutch or heavy purse or backpack under arm or over shoulders as this will cause “rub-off,” of solution.
6. Refrain from any rubbing action of body skin during “tan time,” (6-8 hours) to achieve best result.
7. Shower as late as possible the day of your spray tan, or for best result shower next morning.
8. Lay a dark loose sheet over your couch, or bed during “tanning time,” to collect any tan guide color that is expected to rub off.
9. Relax by watching television or reading during the next 6-8 hours while your tan “sets,” for an even and uniform tan result.

• Do not use loofah’s. Or scrub your body hard for the first week.
• It is normal for guide color to come off.
• Pat your skin dry.
• Your hair cut and color should be finished BEFORE your tan session.
• Any waxing should be completed at least 24 hours before you spray tan session.
• Your manicure and pedicure WITH gloss should be finished before your appointment.
• Your facial and body treatment should be done at least 24 hours before your sunless tan appointment.

The safest way to tan is to leave UV rays out of the equation and use a self tanner (also known as sunless tanner). The two most common chemicals in self tanners are dihydroxyacetone (DHA) and Erythrulose, both of which work by reacting with the amino acids on the skin surface. You’ve probably heard (or seen) horror stories of bad self tanning jobs–streaks, orange hands, dark creases–but these steps will help you circumvent such disasters.

Steps

1. Set aside enough time to apply self tanner. Ideally, you should have two or three hours to prance around naked (or almost naked). It’s possible to get everything done in a half hour, but that’s not a good idea if it’s your first time. Try to make sure you’ll have at least a solid hour to follow these steps.
2. Take a shower or bath. While you’re in there, you want to do the following:
   • Exfoliate. The chemicals in self tanner react with amino acids in the upper layers of your skin. By removing the uppermost layer (which would’ve sloughed off on its own soon anyway) you’re ensuring that the tan develops in a fresh layer that’s going to be around longer. Also, dry skin tends to absorb more color, increasing the likelihood of an uneven tan. Exfoliating will scrub off that dry skin. Just be sure to exfoliate thoroughly, because the spots you miss will tan differently than the spots you get.
   • Shave. This will make for a smoother tan, and it’s better to do before you apply self tanner rather than after. If you shave after the application, you risk creating splotches.[1] If, however, you have sensitive skin, you might want to avoid shaving before you apply the self tanner, or else your skin will get irritated.
3. Dry off. It’s important that while you’re applying the self tanner, your skin is completely dry. If you’re going to be in the bathroom, wait for any humidity from the bath or shower to subside. Make sure it’s cool enough wherever you are so that you don’t sweat for the next few hours.
4. Do some prep work. Massaging lotion into trouble spots (knees, elbows, feet, hands) before applying tanner may help to keep those spots from getting too dark.[2] Also, applying gradual tan moisturizer before the tanner can help make streaks and goofs less noticeable later on.[3] All of this, however, is totally optional.
5. Ready, set, apply! If you don’t want to risk getting orange hands, put on a pair of latex gloves. Spread the tanner over your skin in circular motions, making sure not to miss any spots. If you’re not using gloves, don’t spend too much time rubbing in the tanner (as the instructions often recommend) because your hands will get too much of it. Use a timer and make sure you wash your hands every five minutes, scrubbing under and around the nails.[4]
   • Around your feet, spread the tanner from your legs onto your ankles and the tops of your feet, and use as little as possible in this area. Don’t apply any to your toes, heels, or the sides of your feet.[4]
   • Apply the tanner sparingly on your face and neck because that skin will darken easily. Don’t forget behind your ears and the back of your neck, especially if you have short hair.[4]
   • While most people don’t have tanned underarms, avoiding that area can be difficult, so it’s better to apply self tanner there and lightly wipe with a damp washcloth about five minutes later.[4]
6. Lighten the trouble spots. After you’re done with the tanner, apply regular lotion to the tops of your feet and blend into your ankle, sides of your feet, and toes. Apply a small amount to your knees, especially just below the knee. Do the same thing to your elbows, especially the part that puckers when your arm is straight. Use a lot of lotion on your hands, and blend into your wrists. Rub your belly button with a cotton swab dipped in lotion. This will help prevent those spots from getting too dark.[4]
7. Wait. Avoid contact with anything or anyone for the first 15 minutes. Don’t get dressed for an hour. If that’s not convenient, put on a loose article of clothing. Avoid contact with water or doing anything that’ll make you sweat for the first three hours. Try to wait 8 hours before showering or bathing again. If you feel sticky, apply baby powder with a large body powder puff 30-60 minutes after applying the lotion. Don’t rub it in.[4]
